YAP YAP YAP SAHUR
i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE music that uses religion (especially Christianity) in metaphors/theming without preaching it or putting it on a pedestal
the only example i can think of is judas by lady gaga, where she uses religious metaphors and stories throughout the entire song to create a picture of someone being betrayed in a relationship yet still returning to it, all while NOT worshiping a god or preaching a religion
the title Judas refers to a biblical figure, a Jewish man who became a disciple and one of the original Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. Judas betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin in the Garden of Gethsemane by kissing him on the cheek and addressing him as “master” to reveal his identity in the darkness to the crowd who had come to arrest him in exchange for 30 pieces of silver (or, his name is usually synonymous with betrayal)
almost every lyric has a similar religious metaphor WITHOUT WORSHIPING ANYTHING!!!!
"i'll wash his feet with my hair if he needs": in the gospel of luke chapter 7, a woman washed Jesus's feet with her tears, her hair falling on his feet - instead of using this to praise jesus, she uses it to portray herself as the sinning woman and judas as jesus
"forgive him when his tongue lies through his brain, even after 3 times he betrays me": this is a reference to mark chapter 14, when jesus says "Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice."
"i'll bring him down, bring him down": a reference to sam and delilah
"i'm just a holy fool, baby it's so cruel" (an example of her religious wording)
"i couldn't love a man so purely": this is in reference to proverbs 22:11-- if you have a pure heart, then you will have the king as a friend. Consider the opposite: if the king is not your friend, then you do not have a pure heart. in the chorus it reveals that she wants to "bring down the king", saying she cannot love him purely
"in the most biblical sense": In the Old Testament, ‘know’ is often used as a euphemism for sexual intercourse (this only shows all the religious metaphors she uses for things OTHER than preaching something)
there's so many more lines that have this sort of religious theming and i love it so much because she's not using it to preach something or spread religion, she's using it to paint a picture of being betrayed by a lover who is bad for her (excuse how stupid that sounds i cant think right now)
this is also shown all throughout the BTW album (the songs bloody mary, black jesus + amen fashion, electric chapel, etc... plus lyrics throughout other songs. i just think judas displays this well since it's apparent throughout the entire song)
using these metaphors to show or explain something completely different is really creative to me and i LOVE it because its not pushing religion on anyone, its almost repurposing it (if that makes sense)
